Gmail adds Auto-expire mails for mobile devices

Google’s Gmail is getting constant updates with new features and becoming more smarter every day. In last April google updated Gmail with brand new features such as snoozing, smart reply and offline support. Google have now released confidential mode in Gmail for mobile devices after web clients.

What is Confidential mode in Gmail:

The confidential mode for google allows to send email which set to auto expire after a particular period of time. Gmail’s new design which came out in April have support for confidential mode in web client.  Now google have officially announced via twitter that confidential mode in Gmail is available on mobile devices as well.

CONFIDENTIAL MODE IN GMAIL- A DETAILED LOOK:

                   Because the feature is mainly aimed to add more security and improve user privacy for confidential data. Google states that uses can send messages and attachments with Gmail’s confidential mode to help protect sensitive information from unauthorized access. With confidential mode user can set expiry date for messages or even revoke access to message at any time.

Expiration time for the messages can be a day,week, month,year and 5 years  as well.. The confidential message recipients will have options to forward, copy  and print it along with download option disabled most importantly.

Features in Confidential mode:

You can also send confidential message with or with out pass-code.

There are two modes Standard and SMS Passcode:

Standard Mode:                                                                                                                                                                     Recipients using Gmail app will be able to open it directly. Those who don’t use Gmail will get emailed a pass code.

SMS Pass code:  Recipients will get pass code by text message, make sure you give recipients phone number.

To stop the recipient from opening the email,

Go to Gmail App – Menu- Sent

Open the confidential email.

On the bottom of the screen,tap Remove access.

 Google support page also says more on confidential mode like It helps recipients from accidentally sharing your email, it doesn’t prevent them taking screenshots or photos of the user messages and attachments. Google also warns that confidential mode doesn’t prevent one from recipients who have malicious programs on their computers which allow them to download user’s messages and attachments. Confidential mode is not available for google G-suite customers.

For users of the Gmail web client confidential mode for Gmail is not available in classic version of Gmail. If you are one using your Gmail in school/work you need to contact your administrator in order to use confidential mode.
